Who Killed the Federal Theatre? (VOD)
Born in 1935, killed by an act of Congress the U.S. government's Federal Theatre Project brought live entertainment, political ideas and creative innovation to millions of Americans. Along the way, it launched the careers of such talents as Orson Welles, John Houseman, Katherine Dunham and Jules Dassin and nurtured such name actors as E.G. Marshall, Joseph Cotton, Arlene Francis and Burt Lancaster. Premiering on public television in the fall of 2003, this 90-minute documentary, narrated by Judd Hirsch examines the Federal Theatre's glory and struggle as it blossomed and then shattered in the buzzsaw of the late 1930's politics.

One Woman, One Vote (VOD)
The challenging 72-year battle that finally won the constitutional right to vote for American women is portrayed in this engaging two-hour PBS special. The program premiered on "The American Experience" in 1995 and enjoys broad national use in America's colleges and universities. The documentary features suffrage movement leaders from Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony in the 19th century to Carrie Catt and the militant Alice Paul in the 20th century. Narrated by Susan Sarandon, "One Woman. One Vote" features the voices of Richard Kiley, Amy Irving, Pat Carroll and Frances Sternahgen.
OFF LIMITS
The growing conflict between what employers feel they have a right to know and what employees feel they have a right to keep private is the subject of this provocative on-hour PBS television special. Hosted and narrated by National Public Radio correspondant Scott Simon the program reveals how private employers, under pressure to control costs and create a productive workforce, are redefining the boundaries of workers' privacy, while employees are learning that health and life style are as crucial to getting and holding a job as skills and performance.
HARRY HOPKINS: At FDR's Side (VOD)
Throughout the Depression and World War II, Harry Hopkins was president Franklin D. Roosevelt's closest and most controversial friend and advisor. This ninety-minute biography, introduced and narrated by walter Cronkite, examines the crucial role played by Hopkins as he worked to rescue the nation and the world, often representing the president whose physical handicaps restricted him. The story follows Hopkins' personal and public life, including his courageous struggle to keep a debilitating disease from interfering with his commitment to serve the president and the nation.
The Odyssey of John Dos Passos (VOD)
is a one hour television special produced by the Educational Film Center and narrated by journalist Robin MacNeil. The program featured the voice of William Hurt as the reknowned novelist, John Dos Passos and was broadcast nationally on PBS. The program presented excerpts from the author's most celebrated works including all four editions of USA. Also featured are excerpts from Dos Passos first and second novels, Three Soldiers and Manhattan Transfer.

The Marshall Plan: Against the Odds
Following the end of World War II, Europe was rescued from economic collapse by a few far sighted men and women in the United States and abroad who designed and implemented the program that came to be known as the Marshall Plan. This one-hour television special was produced byy EFC in cooeration with Christianson Associates. Narrated by Roger Mudd , it features interviews with men and women who participated in the Marshall plan, both U.S. and European officials and as individual Europeans who were saved by this visionary program. The production was broadcast by PBS in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Marshall Plan.
OUT OF TIME (VOD)
was produced by EFC as part of the NBC Television Network's After- School Specials. It is a rollicking adventure tale of two youngsters who go back in time to find the true story of a long ago relative who disappeared under strange circumstances and whose reputation was badly tarnished. The one hour film was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities with additional support provided by NBC.

TRAITOR IN MY HOUSE
During the Civil War, an aristocratic Richmond woman, Elizabeth Van Lew, became a valued spy for the North, helping captured Union soldiers to escape from prison, hiding them in her home and getting them safely aboard the "underground railway" to the North. This one-hour PBS/Wonderworks children's drama tells the Van Lew story through the eyes of her 12-year-old niece and ward who is caught between the values of her peers and what she discovers about her aunt's dangerous and arguably traitorous activities.

POWERHOUSE (VOD)
A group of mischievious teenagers from an inner-city recreation center takes on crime-solving adventures that also communicates useful lessons for life. The 16 part series of half hour programs was broadcast for several seasons on PBS followed by a repeated run on the Nickelodeon Channel. FOOTSTEPS
A thirty part television project funded by the U.S. Office of Education and produced by the Educational Film Center with Applied Management Sciences and the University of Maryland's Institute for Child Study. This series of dramatic and documentary programs provides parents of young children with information and support meeting the needs of the changing nuclear family. FOOTSTEPS deals with such subjects as Discipline, Step-Parenting, Child Abuse, Handicaps, Sibling Rivalry, C reativity and Preparation for School. Each program is hosted by nationally known, celebrity parents, such as Mike & Judy Farrell, Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall and Max and Beverly Robinson. The series is a complete educational package and is supported by print materials in english and spanish for parents, teachers and community groups.

DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA (VOD)
This lively 15-part, 30-minute documentary series features contemporary and historical stories, from MTV's Rock the Vote campaign to the controversial presidential election of 2000, illuminating the practical and theoretical functioning of American government. A professional development course for high school teachers, the series takes the "dryness" out of high school civics by focusing on stories about individuals and organizations whose participation in public and private life made a difference.

ECONOMICS U$A (VOD)
The 20th Century has seen America on an economic roller coaster ride from boom to bust and back again. Economics U$A is a 28 part telecourse in micro and macro economics that features many of America's leading businessmen, politicians and economists as they expose the inside story behind airline deregulation, Microsoft and monopoly power, the Great Depression, the economic effects of global warming, the budget deficit, and many more of America's most explosive economic events. The series is supported by a faculty guide, a study guide, a website and a text book and is being distributed anew by the Annenberg/CPB Project.

Inside the Global Economy
Never before, in the history of humankind, has the world's economy been so integrated and interdependant. Since the end of World War II, the US has been a major sponsor and guarantor of free trade and the mutitude of multinational agencies which has characterized the new spirit of economic growth and international cooperation. Inside the Global Economy is a 13 part college level telecourse funded by the Annenberg/CPB Project and produced by EFC in cooperation with ABC-TV Australia, Swedish Educational Broadcasting Compant, The Teleac foundation of the Netherlands and JL Producciones in Chile. The series integrates the perspectives of leading international economists and policy experts around the globe to provide students with a rare glimpse of international economics and its effect on people around the world. The 13 half hour television programs are supported by a faculty guide, a website and a text book.
The World of Chemistry (VOD)
Nobel Laureate Roald Hoffman hosts this exploration of chemistry as a vibrant science propelled by an ongoing questioning of the nature of matter. Twenty-six half hour documentaries plus text book, study guide and lab manual make this series one of the most popular college telecourses broadcast on PBS and the Annenberg/CPB Channel.

Reactions in Chemistry
An eight part, video based, series of workshops for high school teachers, illustrating a variety of approaches and strategies for engaging students in the study and exploration of chemistry. The workshops feature innovative experiments, lesson plans, field trips and homework assignments. The series also includes a number of short documentaries, factoids and interviews with leading industrial, research and field
mists intended to keep teachers abreast of the latest chemical theories and techniques.
In Search of the Novel (VOD)
An eight part series of television based workshops including eight one hour programs, a teachers guide and a website produced for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and distributed by the Annenberg/CPB Channel in the Spring of 2000. Featuring teachers, novelists, and novels such as Frankenstein, Song of Solomon, Great Expectations, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Lesson Before Dying, A Bridge to Teribithia, and Flowers for Algernon. The series provides interesting perspectives and demonstrates innovative teaching strategies to teachers of middle to senior high school, engaged in the the study the novel.
EXPLORING THE WORLD OF MUSIC (VOD)
A thirteen part series of half hour television programs featuring musicians and ethno-musicologists from around the globe. The series also serves as an undergraduate telecourse in music theory, introducing students to such basic musical elements as melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre. Narrated by Fritz Weaver, the programs features performers like Pete Seeger and Josh Redmond. Exploring the World of Music is being distributed by the Annenberg/CPB Project and can be seen on the Anneberg Channel and PBS in the United States and on other channels in countries around the world.

CALLED TO SERVE (VOD)
“Let the generations know that women in uniform also guaranteed their freedom.” These words launch an extraordinary tribute to the some 2.5 million uniformed women who have served in the nation’s defense, from the American Revolution today. Left out of the history books for far too long, these patriots come to life as we document the landmarks that mark the dramatic journey from exclusion to today’s military where women make up fifteen percent of the Corps and 200,000 women, many in combat, have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. This fifteen-minute video was produced for the Women in Military Service Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, where it screens in the theater and on exhibit monitors.

I AM CLEVELAND PARK

Washington DC has always had its bedroom communities, but few have withstood the test of time as well as the urban village, Cleveland Park. This thirty-minute video, available on DVD, reveals how one historic community grew to maturity and learned to use the power of citizen action to preserve itself -- to stop a freeway that would have fractured the neighborhood, to halt high-rise commercial development, and to save its vanishing “village greens.” For communities facing similar challenges, the story offers guidance to the tools of effective citizen action: engagement, organization, education, research, and strategic action designed to meet specific threats, from all-out resistance to managed accommodation. LIVE FROM THE PAST (VOD)
From the front pages and files of The New York Times comes news stories of the 20th century. Realized in twenty-five 15-minute videos for high school students the series features stories on desegregation, woman's suffrage, the Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War, the Holocaust and Vietnam. Each program contains footage of actual historical events, speeches made by great national and international figures and exclusive commentary by New York Times journalists who wrote of these pivotal moments in the American century. The series is distributed by The New York Times and includes a printed issue of the stories written by featured journalists.
THE SECRET TO CHANGE: by Millie Jeffrey
When President Bill Clinton presented the Presidential Medal of Honor to Mildred Jeffrey, the citation read: "For more than 60 years, from the days of the Great Depression to today's unprecedented economic expansion, Mildred Jeffrey has helped working men and women break down barriers to sical and economic justice." A beloved leader in the Labor Movement, Civil Rights Movement and Women's Movement, Millie tells her own dramatic story in this 38-minute documentary, offering advice along the way on what it takes to bring about social change.
LEGACIES OF SOCIAL CHANGE: 100 Years of Professional Social Work in the United States (VOD)
For more than one hundred years, professional and non-professional men and women in the field of social work have fought for the rights of the poor, the
handicapped, the disenfranchised in all classes of American society. They have helped to establish the everyday privileges we take for granted; Social Security, the 40 hour work week, child labor laws, civil rights. Their names have been immortalized in the battles won and the battles lost. Jane Adams, Mary Richmond, E. Franklin Frazier, Harry Hopkins, Frances Perkins, Jane Hoey, Dell Anderson, Whitney Young, Ana Dumois are but a few whose stories will be remembered in this two part, fifty minute doumentary history.
WHO KILLED SERVICE?
In a parody of the 1930's detective movies, , the son of the reknowned Private Eye, Sam Spade is hired by the CEO of a service dependant company to uncover which employee must take the most responsibility for having wrecked the company's business. This 15-minute training video and its' sequel were designed by EFC for SIGMA SYSTEMS to be used in a workshop setting to sensitize and instruct employees who come in contact with the buying public to the many ways poor or sloppy service can make or break the success of their firm.

MATHEMATICS: Modeling our World GEOMETRY/ALGEBRA/CALCULUS (VOD)
Not everyone will become a mathematician. but everyone needs to understand and apply mathematics in real life. For the Consortium on Mathematics and its' Applications (COMAP), EFC has produced a series of short videos for high school students founded on the principle that mathematics is a necessary tool for comprehending the physical and social worlds in which we live. Each series is based on real-life applications of mathematics.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO NEUROSCIENCE
Prize-winning neuroscientists, including recipents of the Nobel Prize, discuss their most significant work in this series of 14 one-hour profiles. These interviews were produced by Educational Film Center for the Society for Neuroscience and includes such ground breaking scientific moments as the discovery of DNA by Dr. Francis Crick. Each interview and each distinguished neuroscientist provides a fascinating oral history of his life and groundbreaking work.

INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA
VARIATIONS IN LIFE SCIENCE (VOD)
This 12-part middle-school life science documentary series, with interactive CD-ROM, builds on the natural curiosity of students about the world around them. Exploring topics that range from the makeup and function of their own bodies to the importance of tropical forests, the videos address basic questions: What do we know? How do we know it? How do we use that knowledge? What does this knowedge mean to our everyday life?
SETQuest (VOD)
This full screen, full motion interactive multimedia program provides an exciting introduction to 34 careers in science, engineering and technology, from aerospace engineer to veterinarian. Users freely navigate the CD-ROM, matching their interests to a particular career, spending a day at the workplace with a professional, simulating a career-related activity, making a decision and accessing career information. An alternative linear version offers career profiles in a non-interactive mode.
